About Dr Hussain

Dr Shazia Hussain is an experienced Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester. She graduated from the University of Leicester, completed her cardiology training at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, and undertook the prestigious BCIS Interventional Fellowship at Toronto General Hospital, Canada.

She holds a PhD from King’s College London, where she led the landmark MR-INFORM study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, shaping how stable coronary artery disease is managed worldwide.

Her clinical expertise spans all coronary intervention, including angiography, angioplasty and stenting and complex coronary intervention. She has expertise in physiology-guided procedures, intracoronary imaging, calcium modification techniques. Dr Hussain is also involved in the management of valvular disease and treatment via TAVI (trans-aortic valve implantation), which is a minimally invasive procedure implanting heart valves to treat valvular disease.

Dr Hussain has a particular passion for women’s cardiovascular health, recognising that heart disease often presents differently in women and is under-diagnosed. She is committed to raising awareness, improving early detection, and ensuring that women receive the highest standard of evidence-based cardiac care. Dr Hussain has been a founding member of BCS (British Cardiovascular Society) Women in Cardiology (WIC) group setting up national initiatives to improve the recruitment and retention of women in Cardiology to improve the gender imbalance.

She has published widely in leading journals, including NEJM and Circulation, and received multiple awards for her research, including the ESC Stroke Group thrombectomy grant and the Best Manuscript Award from the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. Her leadership roles include serving on the British Cardiovascular Society Education Committee, BCIS Clinical Standards Committee, ESC EAPCI Gender and Disparities Committee and the BHF Healthcare Implementation Fund, where she advocates for diversity and improved standards in cardiology. Her contribution internationally is recognised by being appointed to fellowship of both the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and the American College of Cardiology (FACC).

Dr Hussain is known for her compassionate, patient-centred approach, combining clinical excellence with a dedication to empowering her patients to understand and take control of their heart health for longer, healthier lives. She imparts her knowledge and shares her expertise on both national and international levels through regular faculty contributions, teaching engagements, and participation in live case demonstrations.
